Can You Install Resin Bound Stone Over Existing Concrete?

Yes — and here's exactly how the 1/2 inch overlay works, when it's a fit, and when you need a tear-out instead.

Yes — and it's our most popular install. We trowel a 1/2" (12 mm) resin bound stone overlay directly over your existing concrete or asphalt slab. No demolition. No dumpster. Done in a day for most residential driveways.

When the overlay is a fit

  • The slab is structurally sound (no major heaving or settlement)
  • Surface cracks are hairline to ~1/4" — these get prepped and bridged
  • Spalling and pitting are limited to the surface, not deep delamination
  • Drainage is acceptable (overlay is permeable, but the substrate matters)

When you need a tear-out instead

  • Structural failure — slab is broken into pieces or sunken
  • Major frost heave or active settlement
  • Deep delamination across more than ~20% of the surface

We assess on-site for free. If your slab needs to come out, we'll tell you straight — no point overlaying a failing base.

The process

  1. Pressure wash and degrease the existing surface
  2. Prep cracks, spalls and joints
  3. Apply primer for chemical bond
  4. Hand-trowel the resin bound stone matrix
  5. Cure: walk in 24h, drive in 48h

Why it's worth doing

You save thousands vs. tear-out, your driveway looks brand new (in whatever color blend you want), and it's permeable, slip-resistant and warranted for life. Hard to beat.
